Lisa Urness, PhD
Lisa is a long-time resident of the University of Utah, having completed her PhD in the department of Human Genetics in 1995. She spent 21 years investigating the roles of FGF signaling in inner ear development in Suzi Mansour’s laboratory and joined the Anna Beaudin and Albert Park laboratories in 2024 to provide histology support to “Team Cochlea” in their efforts to explore the roles of resident tissue macrophages in Mechanisms of CMV-Mediated Hearing Loss and in sensorineural hearing loss associated with cytomegalovirus infection.Elucidating the roles of resident tissue macrophages in embryonic development has been little documented, particularly in the inner ear, one of the most intricate and architecturally complex organs.
In her free time Lisa enjoys playing lab grandmother to the sophisticated ☺️ and adorable students in her new lab habitat and ‘jamming’ with them on piano--and learning neologisms like “Naurr….”. She also enjoys gardening, cats, watching Resident Alien, cats, paleoanthropology, fossil hunting, and cats. She hopes to retire soon in order to spend more time with—cats and owls and rocks and dark skies in southern Utah
